We take the idea that a human being is made up of five layers, and that each of these layers is but a veil to the real Self within. This concept is beautifully illustrated in a chant composed by T K V Desikachar, the panca maya slokam. The simple sounds and rhythms of this chant have a profound healing effect on body and mind. After learning the chant, we explore its meaning, and then go on to a gentle physical practice in which we use some of the sounds from the chant. Experiencing the beauty of chanting with others, as you move into gentle yoga poses, will be an experience not to be missed. The repetitive, soothing sounds will help to give you a deep meditative experience at the end of the practice. The workshop is suitable for those with some yoga experience but no chant experience is required. Saturday 17th March 2012 at 2-6pm

This workshop looks at the symbolism of the sun in ancient India. Why is the sun so important, and what are the meanings behind physical and verbal salutes to the sun? We look at an important chant in ancient India, surya namaskara mantrah. After we have thoroughly learned to chant surya namaskara mantrah, we look in more detail at its meaning and its effects on our physical, mental and emotional states. We then apply some of the sounds in the chant together with movement, pranayama, and a final meditation. Finishing with the chant again at the end, this workshop will leave your batteries energised and revitalised. Sunday 13th May at 1-5pm

A retreat gives us the opportunity to leave behind our everyday distractions, so that we can go more deeply into our Yoga practice. Breathing is the first thing we do in life and the last. Usually we do it unconsciously, but when we unite breath and consciousness it becomes an immensely powerful tool for change. It is one of the quickest ways to make us feel calmer and clearer and the most powerful tool of yoga, whether we are wanting physical and mental health, healing, or spiritual transformation. This weekend will combine theory and practice, so that you should feel more inspired and more confident in using yoga breathing practices. It will end after lunch on Sunday.

Today, the perception of yoga is so often limited to asana and relaxation, with the emphasis on benefits for the body. Yet yoga traditionally is holistic, addressing itself primarily to the mind, perceived as the source of our problems. Meditation was seen as a primary tool in effecting transformation and this course will look at meditation within the yoga tradition. It is for experienced yoga practitioners who are drawn to go deeper into their yoga practice, and who would like to establish a personal meditative practice. The other weekends are Sept 21-23 and Nov 9-11. They end after lunch on Sunday.

This retreat co-tutored by Andrew Curtis-Payne, held at a beautiful quiet centre in the Chilterns, is intended for a small group of yoga teachers, trainee teachers and experienced students. Su-kha, a feeling of inner space, is something that continues to develop as our Yoga practice deepens. Initially, it appears now and then, in a teaching situation, motivating us to persist with Yoga. Ultimately, we want to have this sensation with us all the time, regardless of our situation. As well as developing through discussion an understanding of su-kha, we will seek on this retreat to further strengthen its presence within ourselves through asana, pranayama and mantra practices. Finish Sunday 13th at 4pm. More details, application form on my website. BWY and affiliated teachers may at their discretion count the retreat as up to 15 hours CPD. Cost £240 (£225 if sharing a room) includes accommodation and all meals. Please send cheque for non-refundable deposit of £80 payable to M D Hutchinson (Yoga) to Hafod, Burney Bit, Pamber Heath, TADLEY, Hants RG26 3TN
